Autograph Please!

AUTOGRAPH PLEASE!

HOBBIES are said to be our best friends in our spare time, and can be very rewarding, in more than one ways. Hobbies can generally be grouped in two main categories: Doing Things, and Collecting Things. Of course, there are many things one can do in these two groups. One very interesting hobby can be collecting autographs.

WE can collect autographs of famous personalities, or of friends at school and elsewhere. Every child carries or can carry an autograph book, sophisticated or a simple one, like a school notebook. Collecting autographs of famous personalities like film-stars or sports persons can be a tricky and tiring affair at times. But then the results can be a worthwhile experience (and even a fortune-making one!). I am proud to say that I have in my possession many autographs of many famous personalities, ranging from TV, film and sports world. Many of these autographs were taken when some of them were not as famous as they are now.

WHAT puts off people, whose autographs you are seeking, is a hastily produced slip of paper fished out of your pocket, or a hurriedly-torn page from a notebook, or a currency note (yes, I have seen many do this!). If you do this, then don't blame people if they refuse to oblige you with their autographs. Always carry an Autograph Book with you. They are availabl
e in many designs, sizes and shapes at any decent stationery store in your neighbourhood, and don't cost a bomb. Or better still, you can make one yourself. A small-sized book is ideal to be carried easily everywhere. You can even decorate it yourself.

IF you can keep your eyes and ears open, wear a smile on your face and have lots of patience, you can get some rare autographs. I have got some of my rare autographs while I was waiting at airports or railway stations. Whenever I went to theatres to see films, I carried my autograph book. When I went to see stage performances, I made it a point to go backstage and ask for autographs of the artistes. And most of the times, they never fail you.

YOU can also write to a famous personality and hope to get a reply. However, in this case, it may be a better idea to enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. If you are lucky, you may even end up getting a personally autographed photograph, with a personal note.

IF you have no patience or the push to collect autographs of famous personalities, why not ask your relatives, friends and teachers to write in your autograph book? You can ask them to write a brief message, if they can.

Whenever you meet an interesting person, produce your autograph book. For all you know, an interesting, unknown person of today may be the Prime Minister, or a famous matinee idol of tomorrow. Oh yes, Now, can I have your Autograph Please?
