Breaking Down The Concept Of Spirituality

There are so many opinions regarding the matter of spirituality. Whatever your opinion may be, what really matters is what you believe in. It is inevitable for people to have differences in opinions. And with such an abstract concept as spirituality, you can therefore expect a lot of different opinions to arise on the matter.

Checking dictionaries all over the web, these would define spirituality as pertaining to matters of the spirit and religion. This would, in essence, involve sacred matters. However, with these definitions, you would have that need to further define the concept of religion and the spirit. Thus, the meaning of spirituality is actually as relative as it gets. Regarding religion, is it really the purpose that we are supposed to have in life? Should it be treated as the ultimate goal? Or is it just the path towards spirituality? How do you define spirit? And what makes something scared? Yes, the path towards defining spirituality can certainly pave the way for more questions to be answered.

The concept of the soul is indeed involved in spirituality. This actually makes up the very essence or core of our very being. As popularly accepted, we call come from God. However way we call God, whether we call him or her Yahweh, Allah, Jehovah, Jesus Christ, the basic premise here is that we all come from a certain God. But from this origin, just how did we become human in the first place? Evolution would attribute this to survival of the fittest, as proposed by Charles Darwin. Taking the perspective of the creationist, then you would say that we are all created in the image and likeness of God. Believers of Hinduism would

say that the Lord can take any form he wants to. And it is because of this that we are not created as forms at all, but as spirits. So, the template here would not be the form that we take. Rather, it would be our spirit. If we were to take the form of a boar, and we have the ability to speak like man, then we would speak the same way we would as men. Taking this perspective, it would not really matter that much if you would go with either the creationist view or the evolutionist.

The ideal of the spirit, in its most basic sense, actually comes from our very own suffering. We have this innate desire not to experience any suffering. Regardless of the form we take, we just don’t want to have to suffer in any way. This innate desire then molds us into what is known to us as the spirit of God, which is very important in the concept of spirituality.

As mentioned above, what is important here are still the beliefs of people. If you believe spirituality is all about adhering to the teachings of religion, then that should be the driving force that would lead you to become a better person. You would then be treading down that path towards your better and more spiritual self. If you believe spirituality is about gaining that sense of oneness with your inner self, and you perceive the need to rid yourself of material possessions, then this would also be your path towards your more spiritual self. What you should take note of here is that driving force that motivates you to become a better person. Because in the end, we can never discount the fact that mere people are the foundation of the teachings of any kind of religion. Fallible as man is, there is really no concrete way of knowing for sure which particular religious path we should take, to get in touch with our more spiritual selves. In the end, what matters most are our beliefs.

I am an Aboriginal/human rights advocate. In arguing for their inherent right to practice their religion I have professed that as 'relative' & from the viewpoint of this author: That "god" did not create man in 'his' image but rather that humans create "god" in the image of their socio-cultural relativeness.
