Day of Wrath
Day of Wrath is a film starring Christopher Lambert in the role of Ruy de Mendosa. It is a historical film that tells the status of Jews in Spain after the fall of Granada. As we have already learned, Jews were expelled from Spain after the defeat of the Muslims in this region. Their fate in the years that followed, was somewhat cruel. They all had to choose between religion and homeland. Some of them returned to Africa and those who remained in Europe were converted to Christianity. But were they forget their original faith? This is a good question to understand what the term really meant heretical during the Middle Ages. Indeed, in Spain especially when the Inquisition followed the expulsion of Muslims from Andalusia, the heretics were anyone other than Jewish families converted to Christianity; families who still do not mix meat and milk, which continued to tie to Judaism. In the film Day of Wrath, these heretics were more powerful than the native Christians. Indeed, a Cheriff (Officer of the Order), discover one day, two large body of people. He will begin his investigation. A few days later, he rediscovered a body, then another. He will see in the parish registers familie
s noble lineage, and he noted that some records refer to some families while others did not mention. Intrigued, he be convened by the Governor who shall explain the noble families that can not find some records are Jewish families who hide behind Christianity and became nobles after 1492 (fall of Granada). He also added that he is only line is still alive and will inherit everything he owns. As for the crimes he has seen in recent days, they were entirely his work (the Governor ) because he was himself a Jew. If the Governor had to declare its origins, the church would condemn him to death immediately. Here is a very intriguing situation for Cheriff who knows now that he has Jewish blood in his veins and must also kill his enemies to survive. It will make no mercy to those he knows as his enemies. He will wind up last in order to assert its authority over the city and his subjects. The deeper meaning of the film is that no matter if we are Christian or Jewish, we all aspire to a better, healthier food, a woman whom they love. Religion does not interfere in what I really am. It merely give me silly and burdensome rules that I must blindly follow. For those who want to see a thriller in the style of the Middle Age, Day of Wrath is definitely a good movie to see.
