Does January 11 Show Take Place in a Parallel Universe?

FOX Hints About Unseen Fringe Episode Excites Fans
FOX has decided to air a previously unseen Season 1 episode of the sci-fi series Fringe on January 11 before the resumption of the regular series schedule. Since we are halfway through Season 2 it seems to be an odd idea, although a new FOX press release says that the events episode could
take place at any time and may in fact occur in Fringe's much talked about but rarely seen "parallel universe".

In actuality it is unlikely that the episode, shot during Season 1 but never aired, was not intended to be from the parallel universe despite FOX's promotion. The network's statements have some fans confused, however, and others intrigued about this January 11 special broadcast.

Fringe is a sci-fi series that revolves around a team of investigators led by FBI Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) which pursues strange phenomenon and freak occurrences dealing with "fringe" science. The team, which includes Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble) and his son Peter (Joshua Jackson) has been on the trail of "The Pattern"—a series of strange events related to a possible upcoming war with the parallel universe.

In the previously unseen January 11 episode, titled Unearthed, a teenage girl thought to be brain dead suddenly awakes with the ability to speak Russian and the knowledge of highly-classified data only a top-ranking Russian soldier would know. The Fringe team investigates the girl's case, as Walter forms an "unthinkable" hypothesis.

The idea of a person awaking with the ability to relay top-secret information was actually brought up in the pilot episode of Season 1 by FBI honcho Phillip Broyles (Lance Reddick) who supervises the Fringe Team, but the case was not explored.

As a series, Fringe has suffered a ratings plunge this year after a move to a more competitive Thursday night time-slot even while retaining a fiercely loyal fan base. Fringe was one of the few new shows to be a hit in the 2008-2009 television season.

Recent episodes of Fringe have focused on the upcoming conflict with the parallel universe. Leonard Nimoy, of Star trek fame, has guest starred several times as Dr. William Bell, Walter's former lab partner, the founder of the company Massive Dynamics, and
a key component of the events related to the alternative reality.

Fringe fans have known about the existence of Unearthed for a while, as it was originally scheduled to air towards the end of Season 1 but was held back. FOX's statements that the episode might take place in the alternative reality, however, have raised interest in what was previously thought to be a stand-alone episode.

Most likely the episode is simply airing out of order in the Fringe world, however. Fans will be happy, though, to get to see Agent Charlie Frances (Kirk Acevedo) again, as Charlie was killed off the show early in Season 2.
