Looking Back Into Rock Music

Rock music is another popular form of music with distinguished vocal melody, oftentimes accompanied by bass, drums, and guitar.  Other styles also make use of keyboard instruments like mellotron, organ, synthesizers, and piano.  And some instruments utilizing in rock are harmonica, saxophone, timpani, banjo, violin, and flute.  Additionally, the less renowned stringed instruments are used as well, such as sitar and mandolin.  Normally, rock music comes with a strong beat that usually revolves around an acoustic guitar, hollow electric or solid electric guitar.

Dating back to the 40's and the 50's, rock music has roots in rockabilly and rock and roll, which then evolved from country music, blues, and others.  By the end of 1960, this type of music was combined with the folk type of music to come up with folk rock, jazz for jazz-rock fusion, and blues to yield the blues-rock, as well as some music with the absence of time signature to compose psychedelic rock.  By 1970's, rock music influenced funk, latin and soulful music.  It developed several subgenres like heavy metal, punk rock, soft rock, progressive rock, and hard rock.  As the 80's progressed, subgenres included alternative rock, hardcore punk, and synthpop.  And before the 90's came to end, grunge, nu metal, indie rock, and Britpop were known.

Musicians who specialize in rock music are called a rock group or a rock band.  Many of which are comprised of a lead singer, drummer, bass guitarist, and a guitarist.  Some groups do not have one or two of the mentioned positions in their group.  Instead, they utilized their lead singer to also play an instrument, considering he or she knows how to play one.  Other groups also include additional musicians like a keyboardist or rhythm guitarists.  Furthermore, other rock groups or bands make use of stringed instruments like c
ellos or violins, and horns like trombones, trumpets, and saxophones.

Rock music loomed from peace-loving America, but was fairly adopted and accepted by youths worldwide.  Though it initially commenced as a rebellious act, somehow it became the governing music for the coming decades.  When blues and rhythm met with other country music, it was then that rock music came to existence.  If  you happen to get hold of a copy of “The History of Rock Music” book, there you will read all the necessary information there are regarding rock music, together with biographies of world-renowned rock stars, who shaped and gave life to rock music from the earliest times.  The release of such book is just one of the many indications that rock music is very much welcomed by people.

Among the early rock music artists are Woodie Guthrie, Little Richard, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Buddy Holly.  Going back to 1960's, popular rock stars then were Keith Richards, the Beatles, Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead, Mick Jagger, Motown, The Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and Janis Joplin.  Following these names, as hard rock was introduced in the music industry, more names came into the picture such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and David Bowie.  And then, from the 70's onwards, more and more singer-songwriters took part in the limelight, like Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, and James Taylor.

Sometime in 1980's, rock music was diversified.  It brought forth bands specializing in heavy metal music such as Def Leppard and Iron Maiden.  By the start of the 80's, Eddie Van Halen garnered musical innovation with rock guitar, and performers like The Go-Go's and Billy Idol continued to rise in popularity.  Other American names in rock music who had their own share of success are Donnie Iris, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Bob Singer, Paul Simon, and Peter Gabriel.  Lastly, as years rolled on, rock music produced extreme forms like the thrash metal rock, with Megadeth and Metallica popularizing them.

As a baby boomer, I can deeply appreciate your article. A few great names left out, were Deep Purple and The James Gang. Two of my favorite groups. But all in all those groups mentioned brought in a new era of music that changed how we look at music today. Great article. I loved it.

Rock music has so many genres today but its basic mix of energetic beat, double sided meanings of its lyrics and countless charismatic singers have made this line of music so popular and profitable.

It continues to energize people to dance, release there stress and just have fun. Rock and Roll rules even today.

Ahhh...the 60's, 70's...the music was good then (in my opinion). Full of soul and positive energy; love, peace, harmony, unity, equality; all the right things. I miss it. I am a musician of sorts; I compose tunes, write lyrics, and even sing and record on occasion; I think the Beatles were my biggest influence.

Good job!
