It
takes a lot to be a director, and make a cut at that. Make your mark with these
steps on how to be a director.
Becoming a successful director does not happen in just a snap. Ask any accomplished director what it takes to become and s/he is more likely to say that it takes more than just talent to become one. And while there is no single, quick step for becoming successful, aspiring and budding directors can always find many ways to make the cut. Apart from studying the field of course, here are some steps that can help you become more than just a director.
Know your role. In order to be good at directing, you need to know what being a director is and understand its responsibilities. The director is responsible for the overall image of a stage, documentary, film or television production. You must have the ability to clearly visualize a picture or story and effectively communicate them to others. If you cannot convey your ideas across to the actor, then they may not be able to interpret them well. You should also be able to properly handle different aspects of the production within the given budget and timeline.
Promote yourself. No matter how difficult self-promotion can get, it can be very helpful for you. A good way to promote yourself is by networking. Always keep your portfolio reel updated and available in case people ask for it. Join organizations and establish contacts with people you know, those who know you and persons you know can help you. You can even promote yourself on the web if you want. Remember that the more people you know and know about you, the better.
Learn from mentors. While it always pays to have the skills and experience in directing, it is also equally important to learn, be inspired and get motivation from professionals in the same field to help you move forward and excel in your chosen career. Develop professional relationships and work with them to further broaden your knowledge and experience. While other directors prefer to work independently, it certainly will not hurt to learn new techniques, cultivate ideas and create methods from others in order to improve your approach.
Be informed. Be constantly in the know of the latest in the profession by attending conferences, visiting related websites and reading magazines that cater to whatever type of production you are in. Examples of magazines include American Theatre for live theatre, Broadcasting for television production, Facets for film, Backstage, Weekly Variety and Wired, among many others.
Have the heart. Like any other profession, you will not get any farther in directing if you do not have the passion for it. Some projects may not pay you much, but if you have the passion and drive for it, then your hard work and effort are more likely to pay off. Give it your best even in small, low key projects – bigger things can happen from small beginnings, especially if you put your heart into it. Love what you do and it will love you back too.
Also, don’t be afraid to take the risks. Trust yourself and your instincts. Take more risks if you can to discover and explore newer things and do not easily be discouraged if your attempt fails. But do not forget to be open to other people’s ideas and suggestions that you think can help you with your vision. In addition, always be open to new and diverse ideas and be able to embrace and understand the many different aspects of the human condition.
But most importantly, always enjoy what you do. By following these simple steps, you can be on your way to making the big cut as a director.
