Origin And Principle Of Astrology
Astrology came from the Greek word ˇ°astros (star) and ˇ°logos (theory, study or treatment). It is made of up of traditions, systems and beliefs wherein knowledge of the significant positions of stars in the outer space as well as other related information are used to understand, interpret and organize information of a person's character. In addition, astrology is also used to understand human interaction and earthly matters.
An astrologer or an astrologist is the person who practices astrology. There have been different applications and traditions employing concepts of astrology since its first documented beginnings in the third millennium (B.C.) and it has played a very important role in shaping different cultures, astronomy and various disciplines in history.
Astrology was always linked with astronomy during earlier times. Astrologists and astronomers have the desire for divine and predictive knowledge. Many historians said that two were indistinguishable prior to the modern times.
Astronomy started to deviate from astrology during the slow separation from the Renaissance era until the 1700's. But eventually, astronomy was classified as the study or science of space objects like stars, comets, planets and galaxies. This study is not related to the theoretical astrological meanings of celestial occurrences.
Advocates define astrology in different ways like a symbolic language, art, science or a divine method. However, people who heavily believe in science consider astrology as pseudo-science or plain superstition. Even though conventional science does not support or accept astrology, there are still a lot of people who believe in it up to this day.
There are core beliefs in astrology that were widespread during the ancient times. They were characterized in the Hermetic saying ˇ°as above so below. A Danish astronomer named Tycho Brahe (the scientist who gave the basis for Kepler's Law) also used the same phrase to sum up
his studies in astrology. In his study, he said ˇ°suspiciendo despicio which means ˇ°by looking up, I see down.
Even though it was generally held by astrologers worldwide that that what happens in the heavens are reflected on Earthly events, there have been historical debates among astrologers in the West about the mechanism and nature of astrology. The debate in the West also tackled whether celestial objects are the only signs of events or not and whether they are definite causes of events through some kind of mechanism or force.
Isaac Newton developed the theory of gravitation in which he explored the link between earthly dynamics and space mechanics. However, most astrologers never supported his scientific claims on the research that he made. Astrologers believe that the position of certain celestial objects either manipulate or connect with human actions.
Most traditions in astrology are founded on the different arrangements and movements of real or seen celestial objects and its calculated patterns (as observed at the specific time and location of the event that is being studied). Such celestial bodies include the stars, planets, small planets, asteroids, lunar nodes and other supposed planets.
Astrology's claim to foretell the future or developments is founded on two methods, the astrological transit and the astrological progression. In the astrological transit, the current movements of planets are understood or interpreted for their relevance as they travel through horoscope and space. And in astrological progression, the horoscope is developed accordingly ahead in time for setting methods.
During earlier times, astrologers relied on close observation and study of celestial objects and the graphing of their various movements. Astrologers these days use data given by astronomers that are transformed into astrology tables that show the changing zodiac positions of celestial bodies in the period of time.
Astrology is something that many people are so fascinated about. Because of its origin and principles, it is still very much popular all around the world.
