The Future of The Music Business - Part 1

Ive been in the Music Business now for 30 years in one way or another. Ive seen it change many times, and not always for the good. Ive watched many bands that were awesome, struggle on the road financially, then breakup. Some slept in cars, while others slept in vans and on the ground with sleeping bags. This was due to bad promotions or poor attendance and bands were lucky to see $50 a night. Some bands never saw a dime and didnt eat, while others had guarantee's and toured well. What does the future hold for the new talent that has to start from scratch?

1. Distributing Your Music From the Start!

Some bands or Solo Artists start off with no money and no way to get there self known. While some bands and artists have the finances to promote their music and distribute many CD's throughout the US. Lets say you dont have a dime, and your music is awesome. You just know it will sell and get the airplay it deserves, then it hits,$$$$. In todays music industry it can cost up to $25000 just to get your CD recorded and mastered, then it can go an
other $500 just for the Artwork,Jewel cases, blank CD's,duplication, and distribution. Then the real fun starts, who gets the presskits? This can cost just as much,if not double what you spend in the begining to get yourself known.

First Start a buzz locally,(in your Town/city) with friends and Radio. If you cant afford to record your CD at a Studio, then i would start by getting Blank CD's with Blank Jewel Cases(Wal-Mart,Kmart,etc.)cheap as you can find. Then, use a windows program like paint to make your sleeves for Jewel Cases. You can design Background,Logo,cd titles, and other important info required like,Copyright info, band members, booking info, etc. As far as the CD,there are ways to cover CD with artwork to hide that silver/gold blank look. Then, its a good idea to talk with your local Radio(Program Director) about supporting local talent with airplay! They usually have a Night Tracks,or a morning show that promotes new talent. In part 2,we will get a little deeper in cutting costs!

This is a very good article to help independent artists. I myself have also been in this business for years and I do everything you said and other things....I have learned this since I have been singing and it will pay off if you fallow your dreams and believe in yourself!

God Bless,
