Writing a movie review is fun but challenging if
you are new to it. Here are helpful tips for students and budding movie
critics. Whether you need it for homework
or you just want to tell moviegoers which movies are worth watching, you do not
have to be a literary genius in order to write a movie review.
It is as simple as having an
opinion about the movie you have seen and writing about it . What do you think
about the movie? What makes you think so? These are just some of the questions
that will help you get started on writing a movie review.
If you are writing for a movie
information website, then you have the freedom to choose the movies to write
about. For school, you will most likely have a theme to follow - that is, if
the movie was not assigned to you. If you are required to review a movie that
you are not interested in, do not complain about it because it does not matter
whether you liked the movie or not.
It is perfectly fine to write a
completely negative or positive movie review, if that is really how you feel
about the movie because as everybody knows there are incredibly good and bad
movies. The important thing is how you explain your thoughts. You cannot just
rant or rave about a movie since the readers will naturally ask, “What makes it
so bad/good?”
Support your general opinion by
looking at the different elements of the movie – direction, screenplay, acting,
cinematography, soundtrack, special effects, casting and etcetera. Aside from
your own personal opinion, you should also include facts in your movie review
so you need to do a bit of research. Make sure you get the title correctly as
well as the names of the director, screenwriter and the cast. The running time
or the length of the movie and the rating are also mentioned in a movie review.
You may need to watch the movie
more than once to really absorb what is going on. Some write their reviews as
soon as watching the film while others take some time to think first,
especially if they hated the movie but they need to stay objective in reviewing
it. The style of writing is also influenced by who the target readers are. If
the review will be posted in a site for film buffs, then the review is likely
to be more technical compared to if you are writing the movie review for school
(unless you are a film student).
Think of a good introduction. Many
people expect movie reviews to be entertaining, too. Adding humor to your
write-up is always a good idea. It is unavoidable to talk about the basic plot
but just make sure you do not ruin the movie-watching experience of others by
giving away the twists or surprising elements of the movie and certainly not
the ending. If your review has spoilers, let the readers know ahead by
including a note at the start of the review.
When you are done with your movie
review, check it for accuracy as well as spelling and grammar errors. You can
also ask a friend to read it just to see how well your thoughts flow. Be
prepared to make several edits before finally submitting your work for
publication.
In addition, keep in mind that in
the same way not everybody likes the same movie, not every reader will like
your review so you should expect that some people will not agree with you. Do
not get into fights because of negative feedback or be intimated by it. Just
have fun -you never know, you might gain a following and eventually get paid
writing movie reviews.
